Stock Straighteners like Vertical Stock Reels have been in existence for many years and have also undergone minor design changes with the exception of the control systems.  The function of the straightener in the processing of coiled metals is to remove coil set which in induced into the metal when it is "coiled up" for shipping purposes.  The reason coil set must be removed is that the material must be reasonably flat in order to process it through the production machine.

A typical straightener would have seven straightening rolls, two entrance pinch rolls, and two exit pinch rolls for a total of eleven rolls.  Generally, these rolls would be hardened and ground.  Their diameter would vary, depending upon the capacity of the machine.
TSC Device
Pictured at right is a powered straightener with eleven straightening rolls.  The rolls are arranged as an upper bank of rolls and a lower bank of rolls which are slightly offset from one another so that the metal being processed can be flexed back and forth to remove the coil set.  In this particular machine, the rolls are 2" in diameter by approximately 6" long.  These specifications give this unit the capacity to straighten mild steel up to 6" wide by .145" thick.
The Model JSH-67-4 is powered by a DC motor.  The motor drives a chain which is attached to the bottom rolls which in turn are geared to the top rolls.  By putting pressure on the material via spring pressure on the upper rolls, the motor pulls the material through the rolls thereby removing the coil set.
The Transistorized Sensing Control (TSC Device) is wired to the control system and controls the speed of the motor.  The three spring probes are positioned midway between the production machine and the Straightener.  The material runs between the top and middle spring probe on the TSC unit.  As the material hits the middle probe, the motor is slowed down.  When the mterial hits the top probe, the motor speeds up.  As long as the production machine is running, the material will float between these two probes.  Should the production machine stop, the material will contine past the middle probe to the bottom probe at which time the motor will stop.
